How Supplement Patches Work — And What Is Still Unknown

A supplement patch is a layered construction. There is a backing layer that holds everything together and keeps the contents away from your clothing, an active layer that carries the ingredients, an adhesive that keeps the patch in contact with skin, and a release liner you peel off before applying.

The active layer is the part that matters. It holds a fixed quantity of ingredients — which is one genuine advantage over a scoop, where the dose varies with how you fill it.

Once the patch is on the skin, the question becomes what happens at the barrier. The outermost layer of skin, the stratum corneum, is a dense arrangement of dead cells and lipids. Its biological job is precisely to stop things from getting in. Any discussion of transdermal delivery is really a discussion about that layer.

Three molecular properties dominate whether a compound has a realistic chance of crossing it. Size: smaller is better, and the practical ceiling is low. Charge: neutral molecules cross more readily than charged ones. Lipophilicity: a molecule needs enough fat solubility to enter the lipid layer and enough water solubility to leave it again.

Pharmaceutical transdermal patches — nicotine, hormones, certain pain medications — exist because those specific molecules happen to fit that profile, and because those products went through years of formal testing to establish exactly what dose crosses. That testing is what allows a medical patch to state a delivery rate.

A supplement patch is not that. It has not been through that testing, and it cannot state a delivery rate. This is the single most important thing to understand about the entire category, and VYROTECH would rather say it plainly than let a customer assume otherwise.

So what is a supplement patch honestly good for? A fixed, published quantity of ingredients in a wearable, no-preparation format. That is a real convenience proposition. It is just not a pharmacological one.

What is still unknown, for VYROTECH's own formulas, is the release and penetration profile of each active in each patch. We have not measured it, so we do not claim it. If that changes, we will publish what we find rather than what we hope.
