Caffeine and L-Theanine: Why They Are Paired

22 August 2026

If you look at energy and focus formulas across the supplement industry, one pairing appears more than any other: caffeine with L-theanine. It is worth understanding where that convention comes from.

It comes from tea. Camellia sinensis leaves naturally contain both compounds together, and the pairing in supplements is essentially an attempt to reproduce a combination that occurs in a plant people have been drinking for centuries.

Caffeine is a small alkaloid and the reference stimulant of the category. L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid, meaning it is not one of the amino acids used to build proteins in the body.

The combination has been studied orally, most often in cognitive and attention contexts, and it is one of the better-researched pairings in sports nutrition. Findings vary with dose, ratio and population, as they do with most supplement research.

The important qualification: that research describes swallowed doses. It does not describe caffeine or L-theanine held against skin, and VYROTECH does not present oral findings as evidence for what its patches do.

In the VYROTECH range the pairing appears three times at different ratios. VYRO DRIVE runs 125 mg caffeine with 150 mg L-theanine — theanine above caffeine, positioned for longer focus windows. VYRO IGNITE runs 100 mg with 100 mg, an even split for pre-training use. VYRO SHRED runs 75 mg with 75 mg, plus green tea extract which contributes further plant-derived caffeine.

Whichever you use, count your total daily caffeine across everything — patches, coffee, tea and energy drinks — and never wear two caffeine patches at once.
